BRIEF: Petaluma police host meeting tonight on mental health issues

March 01--Petaluma police Wednesday evening will hold a community meeting to discuss mental health issues of veterans, homeless people and teens.

Representatives from Sonoma County Mental Health, the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Buckelew, a mental health housing program, will also attend to answer questions and provide resource information.

Officers will outline what they're seeing and explain their role at calls involving a mental health crisis, said police Lt. Tim Lyons.

So far this year there have been 36 incidents involving adults with mental health problems and 21 involving juveniles, running ahead of the last three years, Lyons said.

In all of 2016 there were 223 calls involving adult mental health issues and 65 involving juveniles.

The free meeting will be at 5 p.m. at the Petaluma Community Center, 320 North McDowell Boulevard.
